Batteries that store surplus energy play a pivotal role in the green transition in Romania.

But making those batteries as low-impact as possible themselves is crucial to energy-efficient technologies reaching their full potential.

That’s why Intesa Sanpaolo Romania, part of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, is helping a leading local battery manufacturer scale up production.

Prime Batteries develops energy-storage systems ranging from large-scale industrial units to those for domestic settings. Romania’s only producer of lithium-ion batteries, its products are used in sectors including industrial, automotive and marine.

Currently, Prime Batteries has a production capacity of 2.3 gigawatt hours annually at its factory in Cernica, but a new €700 million plant being developed in Fundulea will increase this to 8 gigawatt hours by 2029.

The new gigafactory is powered by renewable energy and built on smart manufacturing principles — reducing waste, optimising efficiency and minimising environmental impact.

"These are state-of-the-art plants that combine sustainability, safety and employee wellbeing."

Vicentiu Ciobanu, Prime Batteries’ founder and CEO

To support this growth, Prime Batteries secured a €25-million working capital facility, backed by an 80% state guarantee to ensure the financial stability necessary to scale operations efficiently.

"Prime Batteries is not only a successful company, but also a driver of local growth. It has created new job opportunities, developed cutting-edge technologies and boosted Romania’s green transition while contributing to Europe’s energy independence."

Bogdan-Ion Patranoiu, Head of Corporate and Institutional Clients at Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Romania

While Prime Batteries was only established in 2016, its staff have more than 37 years’ cumulative experience in the batteries field, establishing the company as a benchmark business for South-Eastern Europe

With Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Romania’s backing, the company will continue to shape Europe’s greener future and contribute to its energy independence.

Prime Batteries not only produces state-of-the-art batteries, but also participates in hybrid renewable energy projects, including creating the country’s first operational wind farm with integrated storage.

"Building a sustainable future is the greatest challenge of our time. At the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, we believe finance can drive transformation, supporting projects with lasting impact."

Alice Grittini, Head of ESG Business Acceleration at Intesa Sanpaolo

Our vision is clear: sustainability and growth must advance together, creating value for people, businesses and the planet.
